The Reality of Wrestling

If your around a group of people and you mention pro wrestling you are likely to get into a debate for a few hours. Most people get more heated over this topic than something of importance such as politics. I know for a fact if I asked 50 people in my home town they all could tell me the WWE Champion, but not the Governor of the State. Yea, it’s pretty serious. But the real question that everyone has is if Pro wrestling is fake or real; is it a show or a sport. Well, truth is it’s a bit of both. In wrestling the main objective of course is to entertain, therefore making it a show, but it also takes athletic qualities to perform the moves and to avoid injury as much as possible. Now just because the objective is to avoid injury doesn’t make it “fake” it’s kind of like a self implied insurance policy so the wrestlers can perform the show with maximum efficiency. In the words of the great Bret “The Hitman” Hart, “any idiot can hurt someone, but it takes skill not to.” Have you ever though about how they make it look so real and it doesn’t even hurt them. Now don’t get me wrong I don’t care how much you know or practice if you hit someone with a chair it’s going to hurt. And that’s where the reality of the show is. Regardless if the outcome is rigged, it takes a tremendous amount of skill and ability to perform the acts these men do.

Looks like you are on to something. I am in the minority – I DON’T know who the WWE champ is, but d I know the governor of My state is Jon Corzine. I am from the days of Bob Backlund, Jimmie “superfly” Snuka; Dusty Rhodes, Rick Flair, Ultimate Warrior, The Russian Bear, Ivan Koloff and his nephew Nikita Koloff; Andre the Giant – you know the ole’ school gang. Back then, the moves were geniune and heavy on technique – not all this fake stuff with ladders and trashcans and shopping carts.
Sounds like a construction site. The most these guys would bring into the ring would be brass knuckles in the tights. Or a beautiful girl on their arm to distract their opponent. I remember me and my brother catching the SEPTA train to the Spectrum to go to the wrestling matches. All alone. And no one bothered us. It was the best times ever. Those were the good ole’ days. To me and my brother as kids, wrestling was FOR REAL.

Well I don’t know, I think the Ladders make the event much more entertaining and real. It’s a lot harder to hit someone with a ladder “for fake.” See trhe brass knuckles are easier to manipulate but I do agree that the construction site appeal isn’t a good look for wrestling, but its not wrestling anymore it’s “ENTERTAINMENT!”
